Makeup Is Fun Again at New York Fashion Week Spring 2020

Makeup may be making a comeback, if New York Fashion Week beauty looks are any indication. While no-makeup makeup’s presence still lurked backstage, makeup artists really spiced it up for New York Fashion Week’s spring 2020 season, favoring bold, colorful looks — many of them reminiscent of HBO’s “Euphoria.” Backstage at Tomo Koizumi spring 2020  Kelly Taub/WWD Standouts included Pat McGrath’s Eighties-inspired geometric makeup for Tomo Koizumi, McGrath’s 60-plus different makeup looks at Marc Jacobs — which included rhinestone eyebrows and a healthy dose of glitter — and linear makeup looks from Anna Sui, Sandy Liang, Chromat, Rosie Assoulin and Cynthia Rowley. Bright dashes of color were also big around the eyes this season, as seen at Jeremy Scott, Oscar de la Renta, Christian Siriano, Pyer Moss and Ulla Johnson. Makeup — especially at New York Fashion Week — has been extremely minimal for the past few seasons, with artists and designers favoring a next-to-nothing approach. In the past year, makeup sales in the U.S. have shown a similar trajectory, with many big name makeup brands posting double-digit declines. According to the NPD Group, prestige makeup sales in the U.S. were down 4 percent for the second quarter of 2016, to $1.79 billion. Backstage at Pyer
