MAC Dazzleshadow Extreme Reviews & Swatches (Part 2)

Incinerated

MAC Incinerated Dazzleshadow Extreme ($20.00 for 0.05 oz.) is a muted, medium-dark plum with strong, warm undertones and a pearly sheen. The texture was smooth to the touch, dense and more firmly-pressed into the pan, so it needed a firmer hand or a denser brush to pick up product well (e.g. a pencil brush picked up product fairly well but a fluffy brush was difficult to use with it). It had good color coverage in a single layer but had to be spread and smoothed back over to get an even, opaque layer of product. It showed signs of creasing after eight and a half hours of wear but most of it was still applied after 12 hours of wear (but noticeably creased).

Formula Overview

$20.00/0.05 oz. - $400.00 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to have "12-hour wear" with "silky smooth glide" and a "wet-like metallic texture." The pigmentation is supposed to have "one-swipe saturation," and most of the shades had nearly opaque to opaque coverage but a couple were more semi-opaque and buildable in coverage. The texture was lightly creamy, dense, and physically thicker than the average powder eyeshadow, and I found the thickness made them a little hard to work with, especially using a dry brush.

I had the best luck getting smooth, even coverage that didn't emphasize my lid texture with a lightly dampened brush or fingertips (though I preferred the precision a brush offered). Some shades looked more metallic and "molten" while others had a subdued sheen (which didn't seem fitting with the "Dazzleshadow Extreme" name, and on that note, these were not chocked full of sparkle in most instances, like Dazzleshadows are). I had faint creasing beginning between eight and 10 hours with most shades, while the color would be still be 70-75% intact after 12-hours of wear.

Illuminaughty

MAC Illuminaughty Dazzleshadow Extreme ($20.00 for 0.05 oz.) is deeper black with neutral-to-cool undertones and a satin finish. This shade had the least shimmer/shine in the range, and I still remain confused by the choice in name as I don’t think it has much in common with the original Dazzleshadows (which are drier, chunkier, and very sparkly!).

The consistency was dense, thick, and creamier in the pan, which made it harder to pick up than a traditional powder eyeshadow. With a firmer hand and a flatter brush, I was able to pick up product that yielded opaque coverage. It stayed on well for eight hours before fading visibly but had a fair amount of color still visible after 12 hours of wear (the marketed wear time).

Discotheque

MAC Discotheque Dazzleshadow Extreme ($20.00 for 0.05 oz.) is a bright silver with cooler undertones and a sparkling finish. It seemed to have larger particles of sparkle in it compared to other shades, which often had a smoother sheen (rather than sparkling).

It had good color coverage but had moderate of fallout during application, and it was difficult to get the thicker, almost chunky consistency to go on smoothly and evenly. I felt like a fingertip helped to warm the product up a little to smooth it out, but a dampened brush was the best method for getting a smooth, even lay down of mostly opaque coverage. It wore well for eight and a half hours before creasing on me but had light fallout over time.

Emerald Cut

MAC Emerald Cut Dazzleshadow Extreme ($20.00 for 0.05 oz.) is a deeper, slightly muted bluish-teal with cool undertones and a smooth sheen. It read less metallic than it did pearly when applied to bare skin. It had a really dense, almost cream-like texture, but it was on the thicker side, so it was prone to emphasizing lid texture and was more challenging to work with using a dry brush.

This formula definitely seemed to respond better to a flatter, firmer brush but not a completely flat one–I felt like synthetic, flat brushes didn’t grab the product evenly. I could spread it out slightly–easier with fingertips or a dampened brush–but couldn’t get a diffused edge. The color lasted decently for eight hours before creasing on me.

Yes to Sequins

MAC Yes to Sequins Dazzleshadow Extreme ($20.00 for 0.05 oz.) is a medium, more golden peach base with flecks of gold-to-pink shifting sparkle. It had good color payoff in one layer, which applied evenly to bare skin without too much fussing, though it definitely wasn’t the most effortless formula I’ve worked with. The texture was dense, lightly creamy, but it wasn’t too firmly pressed into the pan nor so thick, so I felt like it applied evenly and blended out along the edges (not all shades did that in this formula). This shade stayed on nicely for eight hours before creasing slightly, though the majority of color was intact after 12 hours of wear.
