Pat McGrath Rose Decadence Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches

Rose Decadence

Pat McGrath Rose Decadence MTHRSHP Eyeshadow Palette ($65.00 for 0.42 oz.) is a new, limited edition six-pan palette that features two satin/matte eyeshadows and four shimmer eyeshadows. All six shades performed well; they were pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing and consistent with the brand’s past releases. If you have most of the brand’s palettes, you may find that there’s too much overlap in this palette to justify purchasing.

I know I’m not alone in wondering when the brand will release a full range of cheek products (like single blushes and highlighters), so I also tried using this palette as a cheek palette for fun (it had no impact on ratings!). The two matte shades worked well, but three of the four shimmers (Pink Champagne being the exception) were a bit denser and didn’t work as well as a blush compared to an eyeshadow.

Pink Champagne

Pink Champagne is a light pink with moderate, warm undertones in the base and peachy-gold shimmer that had a subtle shift and a metallic finish. It had opaque color coverage paired with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that wasn’t too dense nor too firmly-pressed into the pan, so it was easy to pick up with a multitude of brushes. It wore well for nine hours before showing signs of wear.

Pat McGrath's eyeshadows are, generally, supposed to be "super-saturated" with "creamy, soft textures" and "extreme blendability and adherence without creasing." A lot of how well they perform (and to some degree, how they are supposed to be applied and marketed) depends on the type of shades, but by and large, the eyeshadows perform very much as they are described.

The brand released single eyeshadows in March 2019, and the shades have been consistent in quality, look, and feel. They are not removable, unfortunately, so one would have to depot like any other single eyeshadow--I tried using tweezers and lifting on several shades to no avail. The lids are held closed by a weak magnet, so I'm not sure they're as secure as most single eyeshadow compacts in my stash--I wish it really locked in, but there's definitely a magnet that pulls the lid down if it's within 2mm of the base.

The mattes are velvety, blendable, and dense without being thick or too heavy, and they have semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation where a little can go a long way with some of the deeper and richer hues. The satin and pearl finishes are smooth, lightly creamy, and firmer but not dense or thick with good pigmentation, blendability, and easy application. The more metallic finishes tend to be softer, creamy, and smooth with a bit more denseness and no powderiness. The sparkly/glittery shades are often designed to be applied wet for richer coverage or intensity, which has largely been my experience. Most of the shades last between eight and nine hours.

Peach Dusk

Peach Dusk is a medium, pink-leaning coral with a satin sheen. The eyeshadow had excellent pigmentation in a single pass, which applied well to bare skin as the color went on evenly and diffused well along the edges. It had a soft, silky consistency that wasn’t too powdery nor too firmly-pressed into the pan. It stayed on well for nine and a half hours before fading noticeably.

Fuchsia Flame

Fuchsia Flame is a brighter, medium plum with warmer, more coppery undertones and cooler, blue-to-violet shimmer and micro-sparkle. The texture was moderately dense, firmer but not stiff to work with, and picked up well with a dry brush but needed a moderate hand; I’d say it felt a bit thicker than some past shimmer shades the brand has released.

It had opaque color payoff that adhered well to bare skin and blended out nicely along the edges. This shade lasted nicely for nine hours before fading a bit.

Hedonistic Rose

Hedonistic Rose is a deep plum with moderate, warm undertones and a matte finish. It had nearly opaque color payoff in a single layer, which was easily built up to full coverage with less than half of a layer more. The texture was soft, silky-smooth, and finely-milled without being too powdery nor too firmly-pressed into the pan, so it was easy to work with. It wore well for nine and a half hours before fading visibly.

Scandalous

Scandalous is a deeper copper with warm, orange-brown undertones and a metallic finish. The texture was dense, slightly firmer and thicker compared to other shimmers (more comparable to Fuchsia Flame than Golden Honey). It had rich pigmentation that adhered well to bare skin by pressing/patting into place. The eyeshadow stayed on nicely for nine hours before fading noticeably.

Golden Honey

Golden Honey is a medium gold with moderate, warm undertones paired with a metallic finish. It didn’t lean too yellow or too orange, so it was a more balanced gold, and had a slightly deeper, brownish base compared to other golds the brand has released (and there have been many). It had rich color coverage that adhered well to bare skin with a smooth, even lay down of color.

The texture was lightly creamy, dense but not too stiff or too firmly-pressed into the pan. It lasted well for nine hours on me before fading a bit.
