Dominique Cosmetics Daydreamer Beautiful Mess Liquid Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.27 oz.) is a darker, reddish-brown base with flecks of lighter gold and bronze sparkle and shimmer. It had semi-opaque coverage–far more than most shades in the range–with a chunkier, thicker consistency that was less watery and thin.

It was easier to work with the included-applicator, as the thicker consistency wasn’t as prone to streaking and enabled me to get a more even layer of shimmer and color. I still found a separate brush was easier to work with, but I was able to use a fingertip gently diffuse and soften the layer of product if I used the included doe-foot applicator. I wouldn’t apply a second layer as it created a very thick, texture emphasizing level of product that cracked and flaked over time–so no, not buildable. You get one layer and you work with it! With one layer on, it lasted well for 10 hours with very slight flaking after eight or so hours.

Formula Overview

The formula is supposed to be "blendable, buildable, [and] fool-proof" and is available in three finishes. The formula varied wildly from shade to shade with respect to consistency, pigmentation, application, and longevity... It's extremely inconsistent to the point where I'm not sure why the brand released these together and/or didn't provide more accurate breakdown of each shade.

Most shades dried down fairly quickly and set in place for a transfer-resistant and long-wearing finish, but the struggle came in when they were layered--built up in coverage as marketed--and became thicker, more uneven, and then I experienced a bit of flaking. The sheerer shades tended to apply more unevenly, so it took some effort to apply and diffuse while retaining coverage (a fingertip often absorbed half the product applied!). I found a fluffy, synthetic brush tended to work best to diffuse and soften the layer of product without creating more unevenness or patchiness.

The formula was more watery than not, though one shade, Shy Girl, was very much the outlier as it was opaque in a single layer, thicker, and applied quite evenly. The other shades were varying degrees of sheer, harder to build up, uneven application, and were generally fussier to work with.

Shy Girl

Dominique Cosmetics Shy Girl Beautiful Mess Liquid Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.27 oz.) is a muted, darker mauve with subtle, warm undertones and a matte finish. This was the real outlier in the range, as it was opaque in coverage in a single layer (when the formula was supposed to be buildable!) and had a flat, matte finish (the others are shimmery).

The consistency was less watery and thin, but it wasn’t too thick so it didn’t take long to dry down. The product applied evenly with the included applicator as well as with fingertips and with synthetic brushes. You’ll want to work one eye at a time and diffuse after giving it a few seconds to “soft set” to avoid potentially lifting the product off the skin by attempting to blend it after it sets. It stayed on nicely for 10 hours without fading or creasing on me.

Dominique Cosmetics Vibey Vixen Beautiful Mess Liquid Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.27 oz.) is a brighter, medium-dark purple with subtle, cool undertones and a pearly sheen. It had good color payoff in a single layer, so it wasn’t quite what I’d expect from a formula touted as buildable.

On the upside, because the formula wasn’t particularly user-friendly, higher coverage meant less layers, which resulted in better application and longevity than if it had been sheer. The texture as thin, more watery but dried down fast enough that it didn’t settle into fine lines or crack. The included applicator did a decent job of laying down the product, but I would recommend a fluffy, synthetic brush–not fingertips!–to diffuse the product for a more even layer of product and to soften the edges. Fingertips picked up product and created uneven, bald patches, unfortunately. Once on, it lasted well for 10 hours without fading or creasing, but a second layer resulted in flaking after seven hours of wear.
