The cream eyeshadow worked best as a base for the powder eyeshadow or used as an eyeliner, but it didn’t diffuse as well along the edges on its own.

Black Sand (Powder)

Black Sand (Powder) is a deep gold with strong, warm undertones and a shiny, sparkling finish with a light, metallic glow. The texture was fairly smooth to the touch–but it was quite sparkly!–with a lightly emollient, almost wet-like texture that had moderate slip and better adhesion than you’d expect, given the intensity of the sparkle. It had opaque color coverage both dry and wet, but dampened application was smoother, better-wearing, and had a more intense finish. It wore well for eight hours with light fallout over time.

Black Sand (Cream)

Black Sand (Cream) is a medium-dark black with a warmer, almost olive-toned base and flecks of dirty gold micro-sparkle throughout. It had a more matte base, so it had a mere hint of sparkle, which was often gobbled up by the black hue when worn at higher opacity. I’ve found that more emollient, deeper hues, like this one, often do not sheer out evenly and tend to look patchier the sheerer and more blended the edge gets. It worked better as an all-over color, eyeliner, or as a base with the complementing powder eyeshadow. It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation that dried down in about 15 to 20 seconds and stayed on for nine hours before creasing.

The Cream Color for Eyes formula is supposed to be “ultra-pigmented” and “metallic” with a “creamy formula” that doesn’t “crease or smudge.” The majority of the shades I’ve tried in the range live up to those things–good pigmentation but can be applied sheerly (use less and/or apply with a fluffy brush) or kept opaque (a little goes a long way) with eight to twelve hours of wear (no primer). They’re blendable and dry down fast enough not to crease too easily while you’re working on them but not so quickly that they don’t budge. I did find that a couple of the new shades were more emollient than past shades and did have a longer dry down time and were harder to keep out of creases (in this review, that would be Siren Blue).
