Dior Ambre Nuit Perfume Review

Dior Ambre Nuit Eau de Parfum initially begins with more a softly sweet rose, airier and lighter, that is joined by lightly spiced, golden resins and woody-something-rather. The amber didn’t start to eclipse the rose until after an hour, and then the rose was more abstract, contributing a floral quality but nothing distinctive. The drydown is a mix of amber, patchouli, and soft woods that is like a veil of fragrance on skin.

It’s described as having “amber and nocturnal facets” with notes of “amber and rose.” Here are the notes:

  • top notes: bergamot, grapefruit
  • heart notes: Damask rose, pink pepper
  • base notes: guaiac wood, cedar, ambergris, patchouli

It began with bitter citrus and a splash of semi-sweet grapefruit with a tickling pepper before it bloomed with sweet rose. The rose was fresher, more floral and less jammy in its sweetness, but it felt like just the bloom–no greenery or earthiness to accompany it, which kept it airy and sweet. It didn’t take long–less than 15 minutes–before a sense of spiced, resinous amber and nebulous woods appeared, though I’d say the rose was the dominant note.

The amber was amplified over the next hour, slowly but surely overtaking the rose, which receded into the background as a more abstract sense of rose. It was more noticeably spiced and resinous. The woods became stronger with cedar being the more dominant and noticeable note to me against the amber.

Four hours in, the composition felt more spiced but had little else that changed other than everything softening and becoming more of a haze with less definable characteristics. The drydown was primarily blurry woods, soft patchouli, and golden amber.

Application

For testing, I used three sprays applied to the underside and topside of my wrist area on my left arm. I used an unscented moisturizer prior to applying the scent as this is also my swatching arm (aka, incredibly parched at any given moment) as I found scent did not hold well here otherwise.

I received my press sample in January 2022; fragrances are known to be reformulated over their lifetime, so be mindful of when a review was made, e.g. a review from 2010 may not reflect what the same-named perfume smells like in 2022.

Longevity

It lasted for three hours until it was a skin-scent and about six hours before it was quite difficult to detect on my skin. The sillage was incredibly light, while the projection was about six inches off my arm for the two hours and then almost right up against my skin after that.
